We slept very late on Saturday since we had been up all night traveling to Vegas. Jim, Carl, and I ate a delicious meal at a Mexican restaurant (not on the strip). Then Carl and I took the shuttle bus from the Wyndham Grand Desert Resort to Harrah’s for a Wayne Newton Concert and some "walking through casinos" before and after. We rode the monorail for the first time ever.

USA Science & Engineering Festival Illuminates Science?s Role in Hollywood Movies and TV Shows

Washington DC (PRWEB) October 31, 2011

When you sit down to watch television or go to the movies, you don?t have to look far to see science and engineering hard at work. It?s in the high-tech gadgets used to analyze crime scene evidence, the medicine developed to stop the spread of disease, amazing super powers and phenomenal fight scenes ? it?s everywhere. But, have you ever wondered how Hollywood gets it right? Individuals and families can learn about the science behind Hollywood?s crime dramas, superhero feats, medical shows and special effects at the USA Science & Engineering Festival, hosted by Lockheed Martin ? the nation?s largest celebration of science and engineering that will take place April 28-29, 2012 in Washington, D.C. The festival will feature exhibits, performances and appearances by scientists and organizations that work closely with Hollywood film and TV producers to make sure that they are portraying science and engineering realistically.

One of those organizations is The Science & Entertainment Exchange, a program of the National Academy of Science that puts the likes of Nobel Prize winners on speed dial for Hollywood TV and film producers. ?Since we?ve started, we?ve facilitated more than 350 consults ? an average of 2 to 3 each week ? for movies like Iron Man 2, TRON: Legacy, Thor, Green Lantern and the upcoming Disney film The Avengers, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive,? said Ann Merchant, Deputy Executive Director for the Office of Communications for The National Academies. ?We?re not the accuracy police, more like the plausibility patrol ? it?s not about making a movie a textbook, but we do try to make sure that there are more realistic elements included in the stories on which we consult,? continued Merchant.

Several performers at the USA Science and Engineering Festival will give participants the opportunity to experience the science of Hollywood up close and personal, including:

Bus Boycott, Shoe Leather Day, 1949

Bus Boycott, Shoe Leather Day, 1949
Bus Services Usa

In 1949, Duke students made national news with a boycott of campus buses. They declared October 17 "Shoe Leather Day" to protest a hike in the campus-bus fare from a nickel to three tokens for a quarter. Newspapers around the country ran the Associated Press story of Duke students carpooling and walking between East and West campuses to demonstrate against the fare increase.

Over the ensuing two weeks, student leaders met with representatives from Duke Power Company, which managed the bus service. Company officials were unmoved, and the higher fare remained. But the students’ boycott had one significant positive effect, announced by a banner headline in The Chronicle: "School Spirit Skyrockets."

Today, the university runs free bus service between East, West, and Central campuses.

Paralyzed Woman Sues Greyhound Lines for Two Counts of Negligence

Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (PRWEB) December 13, 2011

A paralyzed woman broke her leg on a bus route from West Palm Beach to Orlando because Greyhound Lines, Inc. allegedly failed to comply with American Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. LaBovick Law Group is suing the bus corporation and one of its drivers for two counts of negligence on the woman?s behalf (15th Judicial Circuit of FL, Case# 502011CA019391XXXNB).

According to the lawsuit, the woman fractured her leg in March when a Greyhound bus driver failed to follow the rules and policies pertaining to loading and instructing disabled passengers, and failed to warn the paraplegic plaintiff about the possibility of abrupt emergency stops.

Due to her paraplegia, the plaintiff in this case does not have the ability to control her lower body. Instead of using her wheelchair and its seatbelt, she was convinced to use the Greyhound bus seat because it would be ?more comfortable.?

When the bus driver abruptly slammed on the brakes and brought the coach to a sudden halt, the plaintiff was thrown from her seat and fell onto her wheelchair, which the driver secured in front of her. The plaintiff suffered a fractured leg and aggravated her pre-existing disability. She was also forced to undergo costly medical treatment for her injuries that will continue to affect her in the future.

?It?s important that all persons with disabilities are treated with the highest standards and in accordance with ADA regulations,? Joseph Fields, Esq., ADA Litigation Specialist for LaBovick Law Group said. ?When Greyhound failed to safely assist the plaintiff in this case, they caused unjust harm.?
